La tête du fémur s'articule par énarthrose avec la cavité cotyloïde du grand os innominé. Elle est retenue dans cette cavité par deux ligamens, l'un interne, que l'on a long-temps & mal-à-propos appelé le ligament rond du fémur; l'autre externe, qui est le ligament orbiculaire. Le premier peut avoir un pouce de long. Il est plat, de figure triangulaire, attaché par son extrémité la plus large au bord antérienr & interne de l'impression raboteuse de la cavité cotyloïde, & par son extrémité étroite à celle de la tête du fémur dont il vient d’être parlé. Ce ligament est plus court en arriere & en dedans, & plus long en devant & en dehors, parceque l’extrémité par laquelle il tient à la cavité cotiloïde, est fort oblique. Une de ses faces est sfupérieure & antérieure, & l'autre inférieure & postérieure. Cette derniere regarde la rère du fémur. L’usage de ce ligament paroît être non seulement d’affermir la jonction du fémur avec les os innominés, mais encore d'empêcher que la tète du premier ne sorte de sa cavité en haut & en dehors. Aussi, lorsqu’elle en est chassée par un effort violent, ce ligament est-il souvent rompu; & quoiqu'on parvienne à réduire la luxation, ses extrémités, loin de se souder, se détruisent peu à peu par le frottement, sans qu'il soit possible d’en retrouver les restes. C’est de cette maniere qu’on doit expliquer l’absence du ligament dont il s'agit, lorsque par hasfard il manque en quelques sujets. Cependant, il pourroit se faire qu'elle fut naturelle & indépendante d'aucun accident antérieur. Bernard Gengha dit que, faisant à Rome en 1662 la dissection d’une cuisse, il ne se trouva pas de ligament rond dans l'articulation du fémur. Pour lever les doutes que les assistants paroissoient avoir à ce sujet, il ouvrit l'autre cuisse en leur présence, & trouva la même chose. Il observa seulement que le ligament capsulaire étoit plus épais & plus fort qu'à l'ordinaire, ce qui le mettoit en état de suppléer au défaut de l'autre.
