Fragments from the book Cocchi A. Dell'anatomia (1745). The author translates into Latin from Greek the of treatise Apollonii Citiensis «De articulis» (1st cent. BC) with a quotation from Hegetor's book «On Causes» (De Causis, Περὶ αὶτιῶν) which mentions ligamentum capitis femoris (LCF). It contains one of the oldest descriptions of the anatomy and function of the LCF dating back to the 2nd cent. BC.

E LIBRO TERTIO APOLLONII
CITIENSIS DE ARTICULIS ANTONIO COCCHIO MUCELLANO INTERPRETE
…
Verum si animadvertissent ex
anatome caussam qua id fiat, nervum nempe e capits femoris exortri qui in
medium coxae sinum inseritur, quo quidem nervo, perstante femur excidere non
potest, divulsus vero si is nervus fuerit conglutinari nequit, et sine ea
conglutinatione ut contineatur suo loco articulus pariter fieri non potest,
binc caussa manifestissime patuisset quare abstinere omnino se medicus debeat a
reponendo femore prolapso ueque inceptare facinus quod perfici neutiquam
possit.

The third book of Apollonius of
Citium’s On Joints interpreted by Antonio Cocchi Мugellano
...
If they only thought about the reason from the point of view of anatomy,
- because the femoral head is a foundation for the ligament (νεῦρον) [of
femoral head], which grows into the middle of acetabulum; and when it remains
[intact], the femur cannot dislocate, but when it ruptures, the hip cannot
provide a firm connection; and when there is a lack of connection, the joint
cannot remain in place. Since the reason has been clarified, one can refrain
altogether from a reduction of a dislocated femur and not
make attempts doomed to failure. (2020ArkhipovSV_ProlyginaIV).
