Connexions. L'articulation de l'os de la cuisse, avec les os innominés, se fait par des ligaments très forts, qui ne permettent point à la tête du fémur de sortir de la fosse qui la reçoit. Ces ligaments peuvent se réduire au nombre de deux, dont l'un est externe, & l'autre interne. Le premier, qu'on nomme orbiculaire, embrasse toute l'articulation; il naît du bord externe de la fosse articulaire, & du ligament de l'échancrure donc nous avons parlé; & recouvrant toute la tête du fémur, il se termine par une attache circulaire à son col (1). L'interne vient de l'échancrure, & les bords de l'enfoncement raboteux, dont nous avons fait mention, en parlant des os i nominés, & s'attache à la fossette, qui n'est point éloignée de l'axe horisontal de la têté du fémur.

Par ce que nous venons d'exposer sur l'articulation du fémur, il n'est pas difficile de juger que le mouvement de genou que cet os a sur ceux des hanches, doit être considérablement borné, à cause du ligament interne qui ne sauroit permettre à sa tête de rouler en tout sens dans la cavité qui la reçoit; ainsi que cela s'exécute avec beaucoup de liberté dans l'articulation de l'os du bras avec l'omoplate. Les principaux mouvements de l'os de la cuisse, qui sont ceux de flexion & d'extension, dépendent d'une autre méchanique; la tête du fémur ne sauroit alors avoir d'autre mouvement que celui de pivot, à cause de l'obliquité de sa position, qui approche de l'horisontale. Le ligament interne qui rencontre par son insertion le pole sur lequel la tête de l'os tourne, ne souffre dans cette action aucun allongement; il se tord simplement dans sa cavité, dont l'espace lui permet de prendre toute sorte de formes. Il me paroît que cette méchanique montre assez clairement l'usage de la position oblique de la tête du fémur, & fait voir en même-temps le peu de solidité de toutes les raisons qu'on donne de cette conformation.

Elle s'est servi d'un autre moyen, non moins efficace, pour maintenir le fémur dans la cavité glénoïdale, sans gêner ses mouvements. Elle a placé dans l'intérieur de l'articulation un ligament mal à propos appellé ligament rond, comme Winslow l'a fait remarquer, & dont Schwencke a donné une nouvelle description. Cet Auteur prétend (a) qu'il y a deux ligaments au lieu d'un seul, ainsi que le veulent les Anatomistes: l'un adhere à la tubérosité de l'ischium, passe dans l'échancrure interne de la cavité cotyloïde, & adheré à la tête du fémur; l'autre ligament est moins gros que le précédent, & d'une part, est implanté au fémur & à la cavité cotyloïde. Schwéncke tâche de prouver par deux figures, ce qu'il avance dans sa description. J'ai trouvé dans plusieurs sujets les deux ligaments dont parle Schwencke; mais il eu est aussi d'autres où je n'en ai vu qu'un seul; & , si l'on en croyoit quelques Anatomistes, le ligament rond manque quelquefois. De telles observations prouvent peu; il arrive souvent que, faute d'adresse, on ne trouve point les objets que l'on cherche, parcequ'on les a détruits, & l'on attribue à un vice de conformation, ce qui n'est que le défaut de l'Art. ... Le prétendu ligament rond mériteroit plutôt le nom de ligament prismatique, comme Weitbrech l'a dit; mais, pour avoir une vraie idée de la figure de ce ligament, il faut observer, quand on le considere, de le maintenir dans un état moyen de flexion: lors qu'il est un peu trop étendu, il semble formé de deux pyramides dont les pointes sont continues; c'est ainsi qu'or le voit représenté dans diverses planches des anciens, M. Schwencke ne s'est pas entiérement garenti de cette erreur. Ce ligament est revêtu d'une gaine qu'il emprunte de la membrane qui revêt la glande synoviale; cette capsule paroît quelquefois issue des vaisseaux sanguins qu'on pourroit, au premier aspeét, & par mégarde, attribuer au ligament; il faut observer que l'insertion de ce même ligament à la cavité cotyloïde, est au-dessous du centre de cette cavité, ce qui, conjointement à la coupe oblique de son bord, rend les lulations du fémur plus aisées par bas, que par haut. …
