Fragments from the book Berengario da Carpi. Carpi Commentaria cum amplissimis additionibus super Anatomia Mundini (1521). The author comments on the treatise by Mondino de Luzzi (XIV cent.), describes the form and role of ligamentum capitis femoris (LCF). The possibility of LCF damage is mentioned, as well as the consequences of this pathology - lameness and atrophy, as well as their pathogenesis. Berengario da Carpi uses rare synonyms to designate LCF: ligamentum uertebrū (vertebrum), ligamentum cordosum.

Anatomy of the thigh and foot. Text Mundini.
And the first is the femur, on which the vertebrae of
the back are based, and therefore the whole body. In the lower part there is a
kind of hollow in which the round head of the femur is located, called a
vertebra. Between them, on the inner side, there is a ligament, which can be
called a vertebra [vertebral], and when this ligament is torn, then a person
begins to limp, because the leg is lengthened and cannot be fixed, and the body
cannot be properly supported, and the leg begins to atrophy, since the veins
that pass below are compressed and partially clogged. This joint is called the
sciatic, and pain in it is called sciatica.

Comment XXXX. Carpi.
...but the femur has a tubercle in its upper part, to
which a certain cord-like ligament is attached: which connects with a socket or
depression in the pelvic bone: and thus, there are two ligaments in this joint.
The first already mentioned, and the other ligament connecting the bones from
the outside. The reason why nature has made two ligaments in such a joint is
this: a great range of motion of the leg with a great load.
